Résumé/abstract:

This paper extends research on M&A by bringing forth an understanding of the micro-level emotional antecedents of M&A performance. The findings are based on an extensive study wherein nine acquisitions made by four European multinationals in six countries were analyzed using the grounded theory method. Over 160 interviews were carried out. Based on this analysis, it is argued that the success of post-acquisition integration is not merely dependent upon the critical role of the integration team / manager and their integrative interventions. Instead, the success of post-acquisition integration can be hindered by emotional reactions stemming from the buying firm’s reactions toward the newly-acquired firm or from within the acquired firm’s units toward one another. Unless the presence of these emotional reactions is identified, they are let free to roam around disturbing the potential for successful post-acquisition integration. In addition to contributing to the M&A literature, in a broader perspective, the findings bring forth an enhanced appreciation of emotionality in organizations, with a focus on negative emotions arising in times of a major change, such as an M&A.
