Résumé:

We examine ways in which organizational members influence organizational identity in their language use. Employing the view of organizational identity as a vocabulary, we theorize influence on organizational identity as mutually reinforcing influence on surface-level language and deep-level conventions regarding the proper use of vocabulary. The vocabularies view allows us to extend knowledge of organizational identity work beyond the contexts of radical change, the primary focus of past research. It also allows us to offer a means of bridging between essentialist and constructivist conceptions of organizational identity. We show that the experience of enduring organizational identity can be accomplished through stability in surface level vocabulary despite continuous adaptation in the deep level conventions of identity vocabulary use.
