Résumé/Abstract:
The creative use of resources is a valuable organizational and management skill. An organization’s ability to compete and succeed may depend on the ability to use recognized resources in new and different ways as well as the ability to develop new resources. A central claim of the resourcing perspective is that resources are only potentials until they are put into use. This observation may seem obvious and inconsequential, but the implications are not. In this talk, I explore the implications of making action explicit in three organizational perspectives on resources: resource dependence, resource-based view of the firm and resources in institutional theory. I show how taking a resourcing view (making the role of action explicit) in each of these theories enables us to make three shifts consequential for organizational scholars and people managing organizations.
MARTHA S. FELDMAN (Stanford University PhD, 1983; Honorary Doctorate, St. Gallen University, 2014) is the Johnson Chair for Civic Governance and Public Management and Professor of Social Ecology (Department of Planning, Policy and Design), Business, Political Science and Sociology at the University of California, Irvine. Her research is based in practice theory and explores the role of action in organizational processes. She is best known for research that helped to create the field of routine dynamics, the study of the internal dynamics of organizational routines. She is a Senior Editor for Organization Science and serves on editorial boards of several management journals. She has received the Administrative Science Quarterly Award for Scholarly Contribution (2009), the Academy of Management Practice Scholarship Award (2011) and the Academy of Management Organization and Management Theory Division Distinguished Scholar Award (2015).
